Reese Witherspoon, Avon Lady

Reese Witherspoon has been tapped to walk the awareness line for Avon.

The century-old cosmetics company has chosen the Oscar winner to be its first-ever global ambassador, meaning she'll serve as honorary chairman of the Avon Foundation, which contributes to breast cancer, domestic violence and emergency relief causes.

"I'm very excited about working with the Avon Foundation, with many different aspects of it," the Walk the Line star said Thursday at a press conference in Beverly Hills. "First and foremost, breast cancer research and awareness, programs that they're working on. Someone very close to me is a breast-cancer survivor. It's a cause that's very close to my heart."

The fresh-faced 31-year-old will also appear in a global advertising campaign and on brochures and Websites touting the company's myriad brands, according to Avon.

"Our partnership with Reese represents a breakthrough moment for our company," Geralyn Breig, senior VP and global brand president for Avon, said. "This is the first time we have had celerity representation on all three dimensions of our business—our philanthropic initiatives, our brand and the Avon Representative—and we are incredibly excited to have someone of Reese's talent and stature add her voice to Avon's message to help bring it to the world."

Avon Products was founded in 1886 by a New York book salesman looking to push some perfume to attract more female customers, and its charitable arm was launched in 1955. According to the company's Website, the Avon Foundation has, since its inception, raised and awarded more than $500 million worldwide in support of breast cancer research and awareness, domestic violence education and services and emergency relief programs.

"As long as I can remember, we've had Avon ladies in my family's life," said Witherspoon, who was born in New Orleans. "I was even talking to my mother this morning and we were talking about who was our Avon representative when we were growing up, and she was like, 'Dolores, of course!'"

And while she's no stranger to the Avon brand, Witherspoon is no stranger to activism, either. She's a longtime supporter of Save the Children, which aims to help kids in need around the world through education, health care and economic improvements, and she serves on the board of the Children's Defense Fund.

The head of Type A Films is also a busy bee on the career front. Witherspoon is up next on the big screen Oct. 12 with real-life sorta-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal in the CIA thriller Rendition, which also costars Meryl Streep and Peter Sarsgaard.

Already in the can is the comedic fable Penelope, costarring Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Catherine O'Hara and Peter Dinklage, and Witherspoon is attached to star in the romantic comedy Sammy, to be directed by Lasse Hallström, about a woman who can read animals' thoughts and her relationship with a man who can do the same, only with dead people.
