Reese Rakes in Hollywood's Biggest Bucks
Turns out, Reese's pieces of the pie outsize her competitors quite heartily.
As if scoring Jake Gyllenhaal as arm candy wasn't enough of a year-end ego boost, Witherspoon has topped the Hollywood Reporter's annual list of the Biz's best compensated actresses.
Despite the fact that her latest big-screen effort, Rendition, scored a less than blockbuster take at the box office, the marquee blonde topped 2007 thanks to her slate of always moneymaking romantic comedies, for which Witherspoon has an asking price of $15 million to $20 million.
Witherspoon popped eyes earlier this year when she reportedly inked a $29 million deal, said to include fees for acting, producing and profit sharing, for the horror flick Our Family Trouble. Reps for the 31-year-old Oscar winner continue to deny the accuracy of the eight-digit payout.
Even more impressive, Witherspoon managed to top the salary list despite routinely accepting "no-quote deals" that pay her far less than her usual rate, per the Reporter. (Witherspoon did, however, make her usual major bank deposit with her next role in Four Christmases, opposite Vince Vaughn.)
Ditto with Angelina Jolie, who placed second on the lucrative list. While Brad Pitt's other half also typically commands between $15 million and $20 million for thespian services rendered, she agreed to just $8 million for five weeks' supporting work on Beowulf. The latter film has already tallied $108 million worldwide, nearly 10 times as much as her Oscar-baiting A Mighty Heart.
The 32-year-old Jolie will angle for the top spot next year with roles in DreamWorks' animated Kung Fu Panda and the thriller Wanted.
Cameron Diaz saw her fair share of green this year, due, rather fittingly, to her reprisal of Fiona in Shrek the Third. She came in third on the strength of her $30 million payday for the sequel. The 35-year-old's going rate averages upwards of $15 million per picture.
Nicole Kidman came in fourth on the list, leading a quartet of A-listers in the $10 million-$15 million range. While neither the action-packed Invasion nor the arthouse fodder Margot at the Wedding managed to capture moviegoers' imaginations or pocketbooks, the former flick gave the 40-year-old Kidman her biggest payday to date, about $16 million.
Hot on her heels are comely cash cows Renée Zellweger, Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts, the onetime dominator of the annual list.
Zellweger this year earned her keep with a choice role in Bee Movie and the forthcoming George Clooney-costarring romantic comedy Leatherheads. She graduated to eight-figure paychecks with her Bridget Jones roles.
Bullock, meanwhile, saw her bankability take a small hit this year with the lukewarm reception of Premonition, but she will return to her usually profitable comedic ways in next year's All About Steve, a project that will likely secure her spot on next year's annual roundup.
Roberts, who previously topped the list with paychecks near $20 million, still managed to bank in the $10 million-$15 million range despite an extended maternity leave. While she offered her voice to last year's Charlotte's Web, the erstwhile Pretty Woman hasn't appeared onscreen since 2004.
Her comeback begins with next month's Charlie Wilson's War, starring alongside fellow Oscar-owning heavyweights Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Taking on the eighth and ninth positions in the salary list this year are Drew Barrymore and Jodie Foster, respectively, who each took home $10 million-$12 million for their roles.
Barrymore scored a minor hit (with Hugh Grant in Music & Lyrics) and a bigger miss (Lucky You) this year. She is expected to rake it in for next year's star-studded He's Just Not That into You, which she also has a hand in producing.
Foster, meanwhile, earned her benefits package this year with the surprise hit The Brave One, which also became the first film of the year carried by a female star to debut at number one.
Rounding out the top 10 moneymakers of the year is the increasingly rotund Halle Berry. The expectant mother pulls in an even $10 million paycheck—which is more than the combined gross of her two films this year, Things We Lost in the Fire and Perfect Stranger.
The list was released as part of the Hollywood Reporter's annual Women in Entertainment: Power 100 issue, out Tuesday.
