Reese Frees Up Court Schedule
Perhaps in anticipation of legal battles to come, Reese Witherspoon has resolved one case on her court docket.
According to court documents entered last week, the Oscar winner reached a settlement with Star magazine in her lawsuit over a June 26 story that claimed she was visibly pregnant with her third child and was wearing maternity clothing to hide her "baby bump."
Witherspoon denied she was expecting and sued the magazine for invasion of privacy, alleging that Star published a "fictional" story about her "in a callous effort to boost the tabloid's sagging sales."
"The true facts are that plaintiff is not pregnant, does not have a 'baby bump' and has not otherwise gained weight such that she has had to resort to wearing 'Empire-waist dresses,' 'baggy clothing,' or an 'old-fashioned 1920's bathing suit,'" the lawsuit read.
Witherspoon also claimed that the tabloid was hurting her professional reputation by insinuating she was withholding her condition from producers with whom she intended to work in the coming year.
"Since she is not currently pregnant with her third child, the despicable claim that 'she has two movies coming up and she just doesn't want to break the news to producers just yet'...is defamatory or places Plaintiff in a false light and is very damaging to her," the suit read.
Witherspoon's legal action prompted Star to run a retraction of sorts—namely, unflattering bikini shots of the actress, with the caption "She's Not Pregnant—It's Bloat!"
Unsurprisingly, the tab's admission was not enough to inspire Witherspoon to drop her lawsuit.
The terms of the settlement between the actress and Star's parent company, American Media Inc., were not revealed.
Meanwhile, it doesn't look like Witherspoon's fictional third child is likely to become a reality any time in the near future—at least not with Ryan Phillippe.
On Monday, the couple announced they were separating after seven years of marriage.
"We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate," Witherspoon's publicist, Nanci Ryder, said in a statement.
"They remain committed to their family, and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time."
Witherspoon and Phillippe have two nonfictional children together: seven-year-old Ava and three-year-old Deacon.
