Reeg Sets World Record for Gab

The Guinness Book of World Records has given Regis Philbin its final answer: He holds the record for most hours on television.

Over the span of his career, the gab master has logged 15,188 hours on camera, as calculated at the close of Friday's Live with Regis and Kelly by Guinness World Records researcher Stuart Claxton.

That puts him far ahead of the previous record holder, broadcaster Hugh Downs, who by comparison logged a paltry 10,511 hours on the boob tube, as recognized by Guinness in 1997.

According to Reeg, all that time on-air is just "a big blur."

Philbin began his life on the small screen in the 1950s as a local news anchor in San Diego. Over the years, he's appeared on numerous TV projects; most famously, the syndicated chatfest Live and gameshow Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

The yakker, who will turn 73 next week, has hosted all 16 seasons of Live, outlasting his first cohost, Kathie Lee Gifford, who was replaced by Kelly Ripa in 2001, after she left to spend more time with her family and pursue singing and acting.

In addition to his daytime notoriety, Philbin earned his stripes as a prime-time player by hosting the immensely popular Millionaire and powering the network into number one in the ratings before the show was canceled in 2002.

Prior to the plug-pulling, Philbin captured a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host in 2001.

The host with the most returned last February to host a super-sized edition of the show?this time around, christened Super Millionaire and boasting a $10 million purse at stake. The show was so successful in its initial run that the Alphabet net reupped for a second season, which aired in May.

Philbin's Guinness Record recognition capped Live's weeklong recognition of World Record holders in a wide range of categories, including the record holders for phonebook ripping and balloon animal making. The week preceded the Aug. 23 launch of the 50th anniversary edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Not one to shy away from competition, Ripa tried to break a record herself?for consuming the most powdered donuts in three minutes. (She failed.)

There's no telling how many more hours Philbin will log before he's done, but he's showing no sign of slowing. Still to come: a gig as Roastmaster at the New York Friar's Club Roast of Donald Trump on Oct. 15.
