Redford Stung by Ex-Employees

Two of Robert Redford's former employees are out to sting him for some big bucks.

Jeff Kleeman and Eric Greenfeld are claiming the erstwhile Sundance Kid has cheated them out of $500,000 in severance pay.

Kleeman, who was president and CEO of Redford's Catalyst Film Works, and Greenfeld, who was COO of Redford's Sundance Productions, filed a breach-of-contract suit Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Their lawsuit states that Redford had agreed to "settle a dispute arising out of their employment" by paying them $250,000 upon signing the agreement, $200,000 a year later, $175,000 this October and a final $125,000 on October 1, 2004. They claim Redford was 10 months late making the first payment, didn't make last year's payment and, according to the court papers, "continues to fail and refuse" to do so. The ex-execs are asking for the balance of their payments, plus interest, plus legal costs, plus unspecified relief.

The plaintiffs' attorney, Nathan Goldberg, was out of his office on other business Friday and could not be reached. A spokesperson for Redford said, "We haven't seen the complaint, so we can't comment."

Redford, famous as an actor in films like Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, The Way We Were, All the President's Men and The Sting, went behind the camera to direct and produce and establish the Sundance Institute and its companion film festival.

He won an Oscar in 1981 for directing Ordinary People and was given an Honorary Academy Award in 2002 acknowledging his career as "actor, director, producer, creator of Sundance, inspiration to independent and innovative filmmakers everywhere."

The 66-year-old star has just completed work playing Jennifer Lopez' father-in-law in the An Unfinished Life. The drama, directed by Lasse Hallstrom, is scheduled for release next year. Also awaiting release is the thriller The Clearing, in which Redford plays a wealthy executive kidnapped by a disgruntled employee.
