Red-Hot Foxx Inks Record Deal
Jamie Foxx is having a helluva year.
The actor, drawing Oscar buzz for his performance in the upcoming Ray Charles biopic, Ray, has just signed a record deal with Clive Davis' J Records.
While terms of the deal were not disclosed, Foxx is expected to reap a handsome profit from the deal inked earlier this week, including as much as a seven-figure advance, sources familiar with record deals of Foxx's caliber tell E! Online.
Although a release date has not yet been set for Foxx's J Records debut, Jennifer Fowler, director of new media for the label, says the R&B-flavored disc may come out as early as the second quarter of 2005.
While best known for his expanding TV and film résumé, the 36-year-old Foxx is no stranger to the music world. A classically trained pianist, Foxx released his debut, an R&B album called Peep This, in 1994 on Fox/RCA Records. Although the CD topped out at number 78 on the Billboard 200, Foxx is expected to fare much better on J Records next year with his star on the rise.
Foxx was also featured along with Chicago rapper Twista on Kanye West's massive 2004 hit "Slow Jamz." The single spent several weeks atop Billboard's Hot 100 chart and reestablished Foxx as a viable talent in the music world.
While Foxx's musical chops may come as a surprise to many, his acting skills have recently won over Hollywood's A-list directors and producers thanks to tour-de-force performances in Michael Mann's Collateral opposite Tom Cruise and FX's TV movie Redemption.
But it is Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles in the upcoming biopic Ray that is generating the most heat for the former stand-up comedian and shoe salesman. A recent cover story in Variety magazine's VLife supplement screamed "Jamie Foxx Arrives," and the actor is considered among the early favorites for a Best Actor Oscar nod.
In Thursday's Variety, Foxx was reported to be in talks to star alongside Colin Farrell in Mann's big-screen, big-bucks version of Miami Vice for Universal Pictures.
Foxx got his start in Hollywood via his work on the comedy television hit In Living Color. Bit parts in films like The Truth About Cats and Dogs ensued, followed by his own TV show in 1996, The Jamie Foxx Show. After Ray opens in wide release Oct. 29, fans of the Texas-born actor can catch him in the $120 military action-adventure flick Stealth.
