"Real World" Pulled from Philly

This is the story of seven strangers, picked to live... well, not in Philly.

Three weeks before shooting was due to begin, Bunim-Murray Productions has yanked plans to shoot the next edition of The Real World in Philadelphia.

After Bunim-Murray hired non-union workers to renovate the building that was supposed to serve as the cast's pad, union workers in the so-called City of Brotherly Love gave the producers a reception that was neither brotherly nor loving.

Though past seasons of The Real World have taped in cities with strong union sensibilities, including Boston, Chicago and New York, Bunim-Murray had always successfully negotiated working relationships with non-union workers.

But Philadelphia workers proved too obstinate for the Real World team.

For two weeks, teamsters, painters, carpenters and electricians picketed in front of the future Real World digs. After extended bickering with the workers, Bunim-Murray decided to take their production elsewhere.

"After considerable evaluation, we are disappointed to announce that Bunim-Murray Productions has decided not to shoot The Real World in Philadelphia," a company spokeswoman said Tuesday. No other details were provided.

There's no word on where the show might film instead. The series was supposed to film through July and debut on MTV in September.

A poll posted on Philly.com asked people how they felt about the show's departure from their city. Some 67 percent of the 933 people who had voted as of Wednesday night felt that losing The Real World was a blow to the city, while 5 percent supported the picketers. Twelve percent expressed their disinterest in the whole affair and 16 percent felt that Philadelphia's Mayor Street should have done more to settle the dispute.

For many Philadelphians, the show held the promise of boosting the city's appeal to the younger set, enticing more recent college grads to stay put.

The city is one of the last major U.S. cities not to have hosted a Real World cast.

MTV is currently airing season 14 of the series, which takes place in San Diego.

Previous incarnations of the show have taken place in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Hawaii, New Orleans, New York (again), Chicago, Las Vegas and Paris.
