"Real World" Off to Philly

So what if the Eagles didn't make the Super Bowl--Philly's not going entirely unnoticed.

The City of Brotherly Love will soon be hosting seven strangers, picked by MTV to live together and have their lives taped, to find out what really happens?blah, blah, blah--you know the drill.

A source at Bunim-Murray Productions has confirmed to E! that season 15 of The Real World will take place in Philadelphia. Production's set to begin in April.

Casting is underway to select the next group of roomies who will spend several months trailed by an MTV camera crew as they munch on cheesesteaks and soft pretzels, drink copious amounts of alcohol and spend hours on end soaking in a hot tub.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, seven camera-hungry hopefuls were already selected to inhabit MTV's production pad. However, producers reportedly decided they were dissatisfied with the end result and elected to recast.

It's possible that the original personality types didn't clash enough to ensure that requisite amounts of drama would ensue. Bunim-Murray Productions know what its audience wants--and it can be summed up in three little words: steam, slurs and sex.

Steam refers to the mandatory hot tub sessions, slurs to the obligatory discussion on race that takes place each season and sex--do you really need us to spell it out?

In any case, the latest cast will reportedly be moving into a location in Philly's Old City. If the last 14 editions of the series are any indication, the pad will feature, at the very least, a pool table, a fish tank and a shower big enough for several roommates to share.

To earn their keep (and booze money), the seven strangers will be working at one of restaurant king Stephen Starr's many outposts, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Starr has worked with MTV before--a 1997 episode of Sex in the '90s was filmed in his Continental restaurant and featured staffers and patrons on the quest for love.

The denizens of Philly's online culture have had their eye on the impending developments for weeks now, discussing the benefits and downsides of a Real World invasion on their city.

Fan sites are already springing up on the Internet (see: www.rwphil.com) and are sure to proliferate once the show officially begins production.

Currently surfing MTV's airwaves is The Real World: San Diego. Season 14 of the reality hit made headlines even before it hit the boob tube, with reports of cast member arrests and a rape that allegedly took place in the Real World house.

Previous incarnations of The Real World have taken place in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Hawaii, New Orleans, New York (again), Chicago, Las Vegas and Paris.

Twelve years of strong ratings have earned The Real World its rep as the first and longest-running reality series on television. The series began in 1992, and was the joint brainchild of producers Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray. Regrettably, Bunim died last week at the age of 57 after a lengthy fight with breast cancer.
