Randy Reups for "Idol"
Looks like Randy Jackson will be dawgin' it for a few more years.
The arm-pumping, "dawg"-dispensing American Idol judge has extended his contract with the smash reality show, according to Variety, ensuring that all three judges--along with host Ryan Seacrest--will remain on the series for at least three more seasons.
Jackson was the final principal to re-sign with the show: Paula Abdul, despite tabloid speculation over her increasingly loopy appearances, signed a similar three-year extension last month, while dream-killer Simon Cowell locked up a five-season deal at the end of last year.
No word on how much Jackson or his judging cohorts pocketed in their new deals, but their already-sizable seven-figure checks likely grew a little chunkier.
Not that the quartet isn't worth it or that producers would want to tinker with the hit formula. The show's two weekly installments are averaging more than 30 million viewers apiece this season, and Fox is commanding record ad rates for the show's finale next month.
Fox Entertainment president Peter Liguori tells Variety that Jackson's skills "as a musician, A&R executive and referee make him invaluable to the show."
That last talent in particular may be increasingly handy lately, as reports of a feud between Seacrest and Abdul heated up earlier this week.
Seacrest initially told People magazine that things had been "awkward" between him and Abdul after she joked about him and his rumored romance with Teri Hatcher on The Tonight Show.
Abdul responded by telling the magazine that rumors of a feud were "ridiculous" and that they were both joking around.
On his morning radio show Wednesday, Seacrest disputed the just-joshing explanation, speaking with Abdul on-air about the public quarrel. "You made a couple of jokes about me, which I love. But then on the show that week, we weren't in synch. You and I. I just felt like, for us, it was a bit awkward and uncomfortable," he told her.
Where's that diplomatic Randy when you need him?
Jackson, who is so fond of mentioning his pre-Idol production work with Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Madonna, has also come out with his prediction for which of the fifth season's five remaining finalists will win.
The former Journey sideman appeared on The View this week and said that he expected Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry or Taylor Hicks to be the last man standing--which isn't exactly going out on a limb, considering they're the only male contestants remaining. (Still, it jibes with Idol alum Ruben Studdard, who recently name-checked Hicks as his choice.)
In any event, we'll have to wait until the May 24 finale to see if Jackson's pick for top dawg has his day.
