"Queer Eye" Spies NBC Slot

The Peacock is giving its Thursday night lineup a little preening this week.

NBC plans to air a condensed version of Bravo's lifestyle makeover series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy July 24, following Will & Grace.

The style-conscious series, about five gay men delivering a much needed touch of cool to clueless straight guys, came out with a bang last Thursday, delivering record ratings for its debut episode.

More than 1.6 million viewers were drawn to the one-hour cable-net series--about five times the network's average audience. The show also made Bravo the second most watched cable network for the hour.

"After as much media attention and a breakout premiere on Bravo, we want to offer this unusual series a bigger platform," said NBC entertainment prez Jeff Zucker in a statement released Friday.

However, the crossover is described as a onetime only event to boost Queer Eye's exposure.

But Industry watchers speculate that Bravo, which is part of the NBC family, could be used as a testing ground for new programs that could later wind up on the Peacock.

Traditionally, shows have been launched on broadcast and later repeated (over and over) on cable but lately the trend seems to have done an about-face. A shining example is USA Network's Monk, which just earned star Tony Shalhoub an Emmy nomination; the series aired on ABC last summer, while UPN has aired reruns of MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch.

This week's 30-minute version of Queer Eye re-purposes the series premiere, featuring the life-changing makeover of struggling New York artist Brian "Butch" Schepel, who emerges from the process tanned, trimmed, tastefully dressed and imbued with a new sense of savoir faire.

Casting their chic spell are the self-dubbed "Fab Five," Ted, Kyan, Thom, Carson and Jai--experts in fashion, food, wine, interior design, grooming and culture--were hired to dispense need-to-know gems like why you shouldn't wash your hair with hand soap and vice versa.
