"Queer Eye" Cop Dodges Bullet

A complete lack of style isn't a punishable offense for a Staten Island cop, no matter what the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy crew maintain.

But appearing on Bravo's "make-better" series and letting the Fab Five parade around in his uniform almost landed the Port Authority police officer in hot water, the New York Daily News reported this morning.

But by Thursday afternoon, Port Authority officials reversed an earlier statement criticizing Officer John Verdi for appearing on this week's series.

"Our police superintendent viewed the show with his family and enjoyed it thoroughly," spokesman Pasquale DiFulco told E! Online this afternoon.

According to earlier reports, Port Authority officials were looking into disciplining Verdi for failing to obtain permission to appear on the style-conscious series as a Port Authority cop and for allowing civilians to wear his blues.

During a tour of Verdi's apartment--the episode aired on Bravo on Tuesday and will be rerun on Thursday on NBC--fashion guru Carson Kressley and interior-design maven Thom Filicia both sported Verdi's blue cop top.

Ever the attention grabber, Kressley also pleaded with Verdi, "Cuff me! Cuff me!" (It may come as no surprise that the fashionista has signed with ICM for representation in all areas, according to the trades.)

While earlier reports suggested Verdi's higher-ups weren't too keen on his participation, the force has officially decided to give Verdi's makeover two thumbs up. "We thought the host did a great job," said DiFulco. And that's all there is to it. "We have no issue with this."

"The PBA [Police Benevolent Association] was never concerned that charges against P.O. Verdi would stick," said Port Authority PBA President Guy Danese. "This is a lighthearted show, and Verdi did nothing that would harm the department. I personally thought it was amusing. It is a relief to know that the Port Authority has a sense of humor, too."

Verdi's bum-to-babe episode scored the series its best ratings yet on Bravo, ranking the show first among basic cable offerings for Tuesday. A total 2.9 million viewers tuned in to watch Verdi get the ever tasteful Queer Eye treatment compared to the average 1.6 million style seekers who have been tuning in on the cable net thus far.

In case you missed it, the bald boy in blue got a spray-on tan, a pedicure, a sleek new wardrobe and even learned how to make a "man quiche" for his vegetarian girlfriend to rekindle their long-term relationship.

Next, the Fab Five will direct their efforts toward scripted television, with a synergistic appearance on the Peacock's Good Morning Miami. Kressley, Filicia, Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas and Jai Rodriguez will guest star as themselves in the second episode of the sitcom's upcoming season.

The episode, which also features guest stars Jillian Barberie and Tiffani Thiessen, will air October 7.
