"Punk'd" Pair Branching Out
Ashton Kutcher's hipster antics are just what the Frog network ordered.
The trucker hat-clad thespian and his producing partner Jason Goldberg, whose hidden-camera show, Punk'd, remains one of MTV's most watched programs after three seasons, are conspiring with the WB to create six episodes of a new reality makeover/dating series, Daily Variety reports.
Network execs are tight-lipped on the details, but the project will be co-produced by the pair through their Katalyst shingle along with 3 Balls Productions (For Love or Money) based on an idea by Sopranos scribe Nick Santora who will also serve as executive producer.
No word whether this latest endeavor will feature any of Punk'd's trademark celeb-baiting. According to Goldberg, Santora approached him and Kutcher with the concept, which will be much different in style and execution than their hit series.
"There are no gimmicks to this show, no twist," Goldberg told Variety. "It's just a straightforward franchise with mass appeal."
And WB Entertainment chief David Janollari says the show matches the network's teen-friendly demographic perfectly, especially thanks to the draw of its 26-year-old prankster-loving producer.
"I'm a huge fan of the attitude Punk'd conveys, and this is a chance for us to take the attitude they've invented and bring it into network television for the first time," Janollari told Variety.
The WB has put the show on the fast-track to start filming in December for a premiere sometime early next year.
Kutcher and Goldberg's Katalyst has recently teamed with 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 to develop both scripted and unscripted fare. They have also gotten into the film biz, producing The Dinner Party, a comedy pairing party boy Kutcher with comedian Bernie Mac. That movie recently wrapped shooting and will hit theaters next June.
Meanwhile, it looks as if karma is catching up with Kutcher. According to TV tabloid Access Hollywood, Demi's other half got himself got punk'd by thieves who twice burglarized Dolce, the upscale Los Angeles restaurant he co-owns with That '70s co-stars Wilmer Valderrama and Danny Masterson over the Labor Day weekend.
