Puffy Busted for Bad Scootering
Spring breaking in Miami to regroup following his acquittal last month on gun and bribery charges stemming from a 1999 Manhattan nightclub shooting, rap mogul Sean "(insert nickname du jour here)" Combs has been busted again.
Police pulled over the hip-hopster Saturday after he made an illegal lane change while piloting a rented scooter along South Beach's scenic Ocean Drive. He was charged with driving with a suspended license, detained for 20 minutes, then released on his own recognizance after signing a declaration form to appear in court.
"He was given the opportunity to sign a promise-to-appear form, which is given to anybody who we believe will take care of this [citation]," says police spokesman Alfred Boza. The officer adds that P. Diddy was not singled out just because he's a celebrity (or because of his goofy new moniker).
According to the police report, Officer Mario Rojo stopped the rapper in front of the All-Star Café on Ocean Drive at about 6 p.m. Rojo described Combs in his report as having "tattoos all over [his] upper body" and definitely stating that "he knew that his license was suspended."
He should know. Just days before, the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy was stopped in nearby Golden Beach, Florida, for speeding. After pulling over the Puffster's 1999 Bentley last Tuesday, cops ran a check and issued a ticket after they discovered his New York license had been revoked.
Combs' spokeswoman, Nathalie Moar, says the Bad Boy mogul had been unaware his license was suspended and believed it stemmed from a parking fine.
"Mr. Combs' license has been reinstated and this matter is being resolved by Miami officials now," she says. "Due to the Easter holiday paperwork regarding the validity of Mr. Combs' license had not reached the national database thus resulting in this misunderstanding. This was a simple traffic ticket that has been blown out of proportion."
As for his weekend arrest, it was far from a routine traffic stop. Once beach-going fans realized exactly who was being busted, they mobbed the rapper.
"People were all excited and they were calling their friends on cellular phones saying: 'I'm watching them arrest Puff Daddy!' " vacationer Aaron Rodrigues, a witness to the scene, tells the Miami Herald.
Rodrigues, an 18-year-old waiter from San Francisco, captured the whole scene on videotape and later sold it to local TV stations and the Herald. He said that Combs was more than civil to officers who questioned him, despite the flurry of autograph seekers and fans crushing around them.
Since the scooter charge is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine and possible jail time, detective Boza said the case is likely to go to traffic court before an administrative judge who will ask Combs for a valid driver's license.
"In all probability if he has a clean record, the judge will let it go," says Boza.
A court date has not been set.
Meanwhile, Moar says of Puffy's recent spate of Sunshine State traffic stops: "One could say his vacation was pretty much ruined."
