"Producers" Rings Up Record

Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick have once again produced the hottest ticket in town.

The much-hyped return of the two stars to Broadway's The Producers made for boffo box office, selling $3.6 million worth of tickets in just 12 hours on Sunday--the biggest single-day take in Broadway history, according to a show spokesman.

The show has beaten its own record, having rung up more than $3 million the day after it opened to fawning reviews in April 2001. That figure, however, was for a 24-hour period; the new record was set in half that time.

With Lane and Broderick coming back for a limited run--the actors begin performances December 30 and wind up their 14-week stint on April 4--blocks-long lines formed hours before ducats went on sale at noon Sunday at the St. James Theater and via phone and Internet.

More than 39,000 tickets had been sold by the time the theater box office shut down at 10 p.m. (Online and phone orders continue being taken around the clock.) Ticket prices run from $30 for the nose-bleeds to $100, with a limited number of seats within spittin' distance of the stage going for $480.

An encore by Lane and Broderick had been rumored for months and, as expected, provided a big boost to Mel Brooks' mega-hit musical, which won a record 12 Tonys in 2001 and was played to standing-room-only crowds until the pair took their final bows in March 2002.

Sales had dwindled in the intervening months, with the show at about 75 percent capacity last week.

The actors didn't come cheap, though. For their return services, Lane and Broderick will reportedly be paid $100,000 a week each.
