Prince's Universal Pact

Prince is once again willing to work for the Man.

The funkmeister, who famously scrawled "slave" on his face to protest his deal with Warner Bros. Records in the '90s, has signed with a major label to release his upcoming album.

Universal Records will distribute 3121, Prince's first batch of tunes since 2004's highly acclaimed Musicology.

The latter album was heralded by many as a return to form for His Purpleness, who released most of his 1990s albums via his Website and in turn racked up fewer hits and lower sales.

For Musicology, Prince struck a one-off deal with Sony's Columbia Records to manufacture and distribute the independently produced album. The CD and subsequent tour reestablished Prince as a musical force; Musicology topped the charts, went multiplatinum and won two Grammys, and the road show was the top-grossing concert of 2004, with $90 million in ticket sales.

The new deal, which is structured similarly to the Sony agreement, comes as Prince renewed his publishing pact with Universal Music Publishing on Tuesday. In addition to future releases, the company will administer administer the 47-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's complete 35-album back catalog, including such titles as the aforementioned Musicology, 1999, Sign o' the Times, Purple Rain and Batman--The Motion Picture Soundtrack.

"I don't consider Universal a slave ship. I did my own agreement," the entertainer said at a press conference. "I got exactly what I wanted."

Price said he wrote his own contract.

"Te Amo Corazon," ("I Love You, Sweetheart"), the first single and video from 3121 (which is not to be confused with Rush's 2112), will be unveiled in a multimedia blitz tonight on all VH1 cable channels, including VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul, VHUNO, Tempo, as well as VH1.com and on mobile phones via Verizon's V-Cast.

The video was directed by Salma Hayek.

"Salma heard the song and came up with the original concept," Prince said in a statement. "Salma is the most thoughtful, attentive director I have ever worked with. An absolute joy."

The track is already available for fans to download via Prince's NPG Music Club (www.npgmusicclub.com).

No word yet on an exact release date for 3121 or whether Prince will launch a tour to support the disc.
