Priestley Injured in Car Crash

Former Beverly Hills, 90210 star Jason Priestley was seriously injured Sunday when he crashed his race car head-on into a wall during a warmup for the Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series at Kentucky Speedway.

Priestley, 32, was listed in serious condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, where racing officials said he was "stable and responding," the Associated Press reports.

Indy Racing League medical director Henry Bock said Priestley suffered a closed head injury, as well as fractures to both of his feet and a fracture to his thoracic spine. He was expected to undergo tests at the hospital, where he had been airlifted following the accident.

The actor was moving at about 180 mph when he crashed while coming out of the second turn in the final practice for the Kentucky 100 in Sparta.

"He got sideways and he corrected and then shot off the track," said former Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk, who saw the crash from the press box. "He turned right into the wall, and his first impact was basically head-on.

"What I'm thinking is, that's really the one big hit that he took that might have hurt him," he told AP.

Luyendyk added that Priestley may have driven through some "oil-dry," a material that had been spread on the track about 10 minutes earlier to soak up oil from a leak in another car. Officials say the drivers were warned not to drive through it.

Priestley, the Canadian-born actor best known for playing the sideburned nice guy Brandon Walsh on Fox's 90210, has been driving for Kelley Racing in the Indy Racing League this season, and he's been racing off and on since 1991. In 1998, he snagged the checkered flag at a Grand-Am race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. And last season, he was hired by ABC as a broadcast analyst for the IRL series.

Despite his celebrity status, Priestley has won over many of his fellow racers this season with his driving. "He's shown he's a good racer," said driver Ed Carpenter. "It's sad anytime one of our competitors gets hurt."

This, however, isn't his first accident behind the wheel. In April, Priestley narrowly avoided injury at the Fountain Miami Super Boat Grand Prix, after his powerboat collided with another vessel. The actor said at the time that the accident was "just part of racing."

"It wasn't scary at all," he told the Miami Herald.

In 1999, Priestley also was busted by Los Angeles police after he crashed his Porsche into a couple of trash cans, a parked car and a power pole while driving in the Hollywood Hills. While Priestley claimed he had swerved to avoid hitting a deer, police said his blood-alcohol level was over the legal limit and he was booked on drunk-driving charges.

He eventually struck a deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to five days in a work-release program.

Priestley has been more visible these days behind the wheel than in front of the cameras. The actor, whose film credits include Calendar Girl, Tombstone and Eye of the Beholder, recently starred in the VH1 TV movie Warning: Parental Advisory.

Meantime, Priestley was in the thoughts of at least one of his former Beverly Hills pals. According to the Associated Press, actor Luke Perry called the Indy Racing League's media center Sunday to check in on the status of his former castmate.
