Poundstone Gets Probation

Even though she avoided jail time for child-abuse charges, Paula Poundstone has taken a pounding in court.

A month after hammering out a plea bargain with prosecutors, the comic was in a Santa Monica, California, courtroom Wednesday for formal sentencing for felony child abuse and infliction of injury upon a child.

Per the plea deal, she was put on five years' probation, ordered to finish up her six-month stint in live-in alcohol rehab (she has 55 days left of the 180-day term) and sentenced to mandatory psychological counseling (at least once a week for a year). She can't consume any drugs or alcoholic beverages, must serve 200 hours of community service and pay a $1,000 fine.

But Judge Bernard J. Kamins didn't stop there. He also barred Poundstone from adopting any more children or taking in any more foster kids. At the time of her arrest in June, Poundstone had three adopted children and two foster kids in her charge, ranging in age from 12 to two months.

Furthermore, the stand-up comic can't do any stand-up gigs at least until she completes rehab. Her lawyer, however, is asking the judge to allow her to perform once a week or once a month.

Poundstone did not speak to reporters after the sentencing (she was whisked out the back door of the court), but in a statement, she expressed relief that the ordeal was over.

"Given everything that's going on in the world, my problems clearly don't amount to very much," she said. "Still, to the extent that anyone is interested, I'm glad that the legal proceedings against me have been settled."

Her attorney, Steven Cron, said Poundstone's June 27 arrest stemmed from an incident in which the 41-year-old entertainer was drunk as she took four kids to get ice cream.

The comedian pleaded innocent in July to three counts of lewd conduct involving a girl under 14, and another count of child endangerment on two boys and two girls. She had also been barred from seeing her own children without supervision while the case was pending.

After her arrest, Cron revealed Poundstone was battling alcoholism and in fact was in a live-in rehab program when she was arrested.

Prosecutors eventually dropped the lewd-conduct charges against Poundstone in exchange for a no-contest plea to felony child endangerment and the misdemeanor count of inflicting injury on a child.

"The lewd-conduct charges against me were dropped because they weren't true," she said at the time. "I pled no contest to the child-endangerment/injury charges because they were. My drinking helped to create a dangerous situation for the children [and] for this I am very sorry."
