Posh Getting Special Treatment from NBC?
NBC's programming schedule might call for a little less Spice.
The network is expected to turn an upcoming reality series starring Victoria Beckham into a one-hour prime-time special, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
NBC declined to comment on the situation Tuesday.
The show was originally planned as a six-episode series chronicling the erstwhile Posh Spice and family's relocation to Los Angeles, where David Beckham will be playing for Major League Soccer's Galaxy.
"This show is really something different, it's pushing the boundaries and I think it's going to surprise a lot of people," Victoria Beckham said in February when the project was announced.
American Idol mastermind Simon Fuller, who also serves as Beckham's manager, brokered the deal with NBC, reportedly squeezing the network for close to $20 million for the privilege of airing the series.
The show was ostensibly meant to serve as Beckham's launching pad into U.S. pop culture, with the aim of boosting her to the superstar status she already enjoys in Europe.
"The series will give viewers a glimpse into what makes Victoria so popular and admired as one of the most glamorous women in the world," former NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said at the time.
However, the future of the project was thrown into question in recent days after Beckham reportedly chose to watch her husband make his triumphant comeback to England's national team last week instead of returning to L.A. to wrap up shooting on the project.
"Victoria had great fun filming and she had to make a decision about family or TV," her rep said in a statement. "It is up to the network what happens next."
The former Spice Girl was still being trailed by a camera crew as recently as Sunday, when she attended the MTV Movie Awards, according to E! Online senior editor Marc Malkin.
When speaking to reporters at the event, she did not seem to have any regrets about the possible consequences of her choice to put her family ahead of her career.
"I do not want to miss any of David's games. I was so proud of him the other day. I think he was absolutely fantastic and the kids were loving it," she said.
The soccer star's final game for Real Madrid is June 17, and the couple and their three sons are slated to move into their new Beverly Hills home in mid-July.
