Poco Drummer Suffers Stroke
Poco drummer George Grantham is recovering after suffering a stroke and collapsing during a concert last week.
The easy-rocking '70s outfit was one song into its set Wednesday in Springfield, Massachusetts, when the 57-year-old Grantham, one of the band's founding members, fell on the stage.
As the crew called 911, his bandmates asked the audience if there was a doctor in the house.
According, to the Springfield Republican, several doctors and nurses immediately responded and helped stabilize the musician. He was taken to nearby Bay State Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve a build up of fluid on his brain.
On Monday, Grantham's wife, Debbie, wrote on Poco's Website, Poconut.com, that she and the band received some great news when doctors upgraded his status from "stable" to "improving," though he remains in intensive care.
"George is not out of the woods yet, but he is making great signs of improvement," Debbie Grantham wrote. "Please continue to keep us in your prayers over the days to come."
After a 15-minute delay, during which they were told they could not accompany Grantham to the hospital, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Rusty Young, guitarist Paul Cotton and bassist Jack Sundrud decided to finish the show with an acoustic set.
The band has decided to continue its current tour, which runs through October. After playing an acoustic gig on Friday in Cape Cod, the members tapped percussionist George Lawrence, who collaborated with Poco in the mid-'90s, to sub for the remaining 13 dates. The band's next stop is Wednesday in San Juan Capistrano, California.
While Grantham's expected to make a full recovery, it's not known whether he will be able to get behind his kit again.
Poco rose from the ashes of Hall of Fame rockers Buffalo Springfield in the late 1960s and became a prominent force on Southern California's burgeoning country-rock scene alongside such contemporaries as the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. The band's best known songs include "Crazy Love," "Call It Love" and "Heart of the Night." Grantham, a founding member, played on 12 Poco albums from 1969 to 1977.
He eventually left to record and tour with the likes of Neil Young, Steve Wariner and Ricky Skaggs and front his own band, Hoopla. He rejoined Poco in 2000. The quartet recently taped a reunion concert in Nashville that will eventually hit stores as a DVD.
