Pixies Reunion Rolls On
Pixies fans: Here comes your band.
During a backstage press conference at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival over the weekend, the four members of the reunited Pixies were casual and jovial, cracked jokes and announced they were taking a detour from their international summer dates to headline the July 22 Los Angeles and Aug. 17 New York stops of the Lollapalooza Tour.
The mood was a long cry from the way the revered alt-rock group put on the breaks in 1993. In one of the nastiest breakups in music history, frontman Frank Black (aka Black Francis, aka Charles Thompson) called it off--via fax.
"I made a joke with someone and the joke got taken kind of serious. So then when someone would ask us, 'When are you going to do a reunion?' I was like, 'Well, I guess we should do it'...That's sorta what happened," said Black, sitting in a love seat next to bassist bassist Kim Deal. "I don't know who called who first."
The Boston band hit critical acclaim with songs such as "Here Comes Your Man," "Monkey Goes to Heaven" and "Wave of Mutilation" throughout the late '80s and has had everyone from U2's Bono to Nirvana's Kurt Cobain cite them as one of the greatest of all time.
After a 13-date warm-up tour, Black, Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering simply got down to business on Coachella's main stage. Forsaking chitchat the band tore through 20-plus songs, including many of their greatest hits and fan favorites.
"We just show up and work out our little set list," said Black. "Every night we watch Harry Potter. That's Kim's choice, that's our evening little ritual, we all climb into our little bunks together and watch Harry Potter."
In addition to an ever-expanding U.S. fall tour, which takes them through December (28 dates and counting), the Pixies also have a DVD out. Pixies includes music videos, a 1988 concert and a documentary titled Gouge, in which Radiohead's Thom Yorke, David Bowie and others talk about the band. A 23-track greatest-hits CD, Wave of Mutilation: Best of Pixies hits the streets today.
But if you're waiting for new material, don't hold your breath. The band currently doesn't have a record deal and is focusing on the current tour--for the most part.
"We don't know any new songs yet," said Black, noting that the band has brushed up on some 40 cuts from its repertoire. "Well, we've got one, but it's a secret."
