Pitt, Penn: Men in Tree?
Brad Pitt says acting doesn't interest him much anymore, except when it does.
Just days after declaring his desire to focus all his energy on rebuilding New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward, the Ocean's Thirteen star is now in talks to costar with Sean Penn in Tree of Life, a new drama from celebrated writer-director Terrence Malick.
According to Variety, Pitt would take over the headlining role formerly occupied by Heath Ledger. The Brokeback Mountain star came aboard in October but reportedly dropped out of the project for unspecified reasons.
Pitt—who turned 44 on Tuesday—made a similar move himself last month.
He was set to reunite with his Fight Club partner Edward Norton for the Universal political drama State of Play. But Pitt abruptly exited on the eve of principal photography last month, citing issues with the script, which could not be reworked due to the ongoing writers' strike.
Studio suits hinted at possible legal action against Pitt but backed off after Russell Crowe signed on and salvage the production, which was pushed back to January. (Norton subsequently left due to a conflict with his upcoming indie comedy, Leaves of Grass, but Ben Affleck was quickly signed as a sub.)
As for Tree of Life, in typical Malick fashion, details are scarce.
The renegade filmmaker—whose oeuvre includes the '70s classics Badlands and Days of Heaven, as well as 1998's Oscar-nominated The Thin Red Line and 2005's The New World—is notorious for keeping a tight lid on his scripts.
What we do know is that Penn will play a supporting role in the film. The Oscar winner agreed to a smaller role so he could still have time to shoot Gus Van Sant's Milk, a biopic on assassinated gay rights icon and San Francisco politician Harvey Milk.
Tree of Life will be financed by River Road Films and produced by Sarah Green, Grant Hill and Bill Pohland, the latter of whom oversaw Penn's Golden Globe-nominated Into the Wild. Shooting is expected to begin in the spring.
Pitt was most recently seen on screen in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. He has two films on track for next year: the David Fincher-directed, time-bending The Curious Case of Benjamin Button costarring Cate Blanchett and the Coen brothers' CIA comedy-drama Burn After Reading costarring George Clooney.
Lately Pitt has been making headlines with his eco-friendly housing initiative in the Big Easy. He also popped up on PBS' Charlie Rose Monday and made some noise about how many kids he and partner Angelina Jolie plan to have in their household.
"I think we'll crap out somewhere between seven and nine," he said.
