Pitbull Barks, But Doesn't Bite Noël
This week's chart is definitely in the Pit's.
With a drought of superstar releases that typically power holiday sales, Pitbull scored the week's top debut way down at number 50. For the week ended Sunday, Pit's The Boatlift led all chart entries by selling about 22,000 copies, according to the Nielsen SoundScan numbers.
The album title refers to the efforts—notably the 1980 Mariel Boatlift—that brought countless Cuban immigrants to America a few decades back. While Lou Dobbs might not be a fan, the Cuban rapper sold enough copies to edge out the week's only other significant debut, Mudvayne's fan-generated anthology By the People for the People, which followed 462 discs behind at 51.
Up top, decliners certainly edged out gainers in the Top 10, yet Josh Groban and the Eagles soared above the pack thanks to some choice boob-tube promotion. Groban's Noël continues to ride the Oprah boost that followed his recent visits to her show, while the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden found its wings again with the band's appearance on 60 Minutes.
With a 33 percent surge, Noël held the chart crown selling 539,000 copies. Long Road Out of Eden enjoyed an even more robust 70 percent gain, moving 313,000 copies and climbing back to number two.
Taking advantage of the holiday season, Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas Song leapt 11 spots to number 10 in its eighth week of release. Selling 77,000 copies, a 24 percent jump, Christmas Song joins Noël and Eden as the week's only Top 10 albums moving in a northerly sales direction.
Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, despite a slight sales downturn, still managed to climb back into the Top 10. The Disney Channel hit jumped five spots to seven on 96,000 copies.
The rest of the Top 10, all declining holdovers: Alicia Keys' As I Am at three, Now That's What I Call Music! 26 at four, Garth Brooks' The Ultimate Hits at five, the High School Musical 2 soundtrack at six, Celine Dion's Taking Chances at eight and Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride at nine.
Overall, 26 holiday-themed titles spiced up the Billboard 200, a handful more than this time last year, and these titles made up the majority of the week's chart gainers.
Stockings by the Fire sparked a 13-slot uptick in its fourth week, while Taylor Swift's Sounds of the Season EP shot up 42 spots in week two. Other gainers included The Coolest Kidz Bop Christmas Ever at 57 (up 21), Elvis Presley's Home for the Holidays collector's edition at 81 (up 29) and Christmas Number 1's finally cracking the chart at 86 after several weeks of release.
Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds, which originally came out in fall of '06, raced up 49 spots thanks to its new deluxe edition, which features the Beyoncé duet "Until the End of Time." The album sold 38,000 copies, more than twofold the previous week.
Meanwhile, over on the singles chart, the HeartBeat Boys dethroned the High School Musical cast once again. Last month, the Boys' "Christmas Oh Christmas" hit the top spot for one week before HSM's "What Time Is It" nabbed it right back. The spot swap continues this week, with HBB retaking number one from HSM on 4,700 copies.
In a double dose of holiday gloom, overall sales were down 12 percent from last week and 17 percent compared to the same sales week in '06.
