Pie Babe's Civil Suit Tabled
Shannon Elizabeth's estranged husband may not be moving on up, but he's finally got a piece of the Pie. Potentially, a very large piece.
The American Pie eye candy has reached a tentative settlement with her onetime mister, Joseph Reitman, in a civil suit he filed last March as part of the couple's divorce proceedings.
In the suit, the sometime actor and musician requested half of all earnings, property, assets and investments Elizabeth had made in the half-decade the couple cohabitated prior to their June 2002 nuptials, holdings he described as "extensive" in his filing.
Attorneys for both actors appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday to inform the judge that a provisional resolution had been made, though the legal eagles declined to spill the terms of the deal.
Elizabeth, 33, and Reitman, 38, have yet to officially signed off on the settlement, though they are expected to do so within the next two months. As it is, they have until May 1, the would-be start date of their trial, to grace the court documents with their autographs.
If and when they sign, the case will be dismissed.
"I have no reason to believe the settlement will fall apart," Yvonne T. Simon, Reitman's lawyer, told the court, per City News Service.
"Great," Judge Andrea Richey said. "I have every hope the matter will settle."
While the matter concerns only the five years the twosome spent together before tying the knot, the proceedings dealing with the actual years they were married—almost three, for the record—are being dealt with in a separate case.
For Reitman, the financial gain from the years prior to their hitching could be considerable—at the very least, more considerable than any income he's earned solo.
It was before they tied the knot that Elizabeth became one of the breakout stars of the American Pie franchise, going on to be featured in the comedies Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Scary Movie and Love, Actually. Reitman, meanwhile, languished in bit TV parts, popping up in the likes of Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210.
The couple tied the knot in June 2002 and announced their separation in March 2005. Two months later, Elizabeth made it official, filing for divorce.
In Reitman's lawsuit, filed nearly a year after Elizabeth checked the all-encompassing "irreconcilable differences" box on the divorce petition, he claimed the couple had a deal in place during their premarital days to split everything down the middle. He also claims that Elizabeth was less than upstanding in upholding the bargain.
After the couple separated, the suit claims, the actress secretly transferred assets and investments she made during the five-year period.
Reitman is also seeking a share of property, artwork, furniture and collectibles from their premarital days.
But while she may be out some cash once she signs off on the settlement, Elizabeth is already on the road to recouping expenses.
The card-happy actress recently wrapped production on the poker drama Deal, alongside Burt Reynolds, and the poker comedy The Grand, costarring Cheryl Hines, Judy Greer, Woody Harrelson, Chris Parnell and Ray Romano. The improvisational farce was filmed during an actual celebrity poker tournament and hits theaters next year.
