Pete Doherty Questioned in Party Death
When it comes to Pete Doherty, it seems there's no such thing as good press.
The Babyshambles singer has been questioned by police about his attendance at a Dec. 3 party at which a man fell to his death.
The family of the late man, an aspiring actor named Mark Blanco, demanded an investigation into his death after questioning why Doherty and others left the scene before police arrived.
Police have said that Doherty has not a suspect in the death and that they believe Blanco tumbled from a second-floor balcony at the party, which was held by Doherty's literary agent and friend, Paul Roundhill.
However, guests at the party told Britain's Guardian that the rocker and Blanco got into a scuffle at the party and that Roundhill subsequently asked Blanco to leave.
Blanco's family questioned why he had a freshly acquired black eye at the time of his death, claiming that he was a pacifist who did not believe in violence. They also said he suffered from severe vertigo and was unlikely to have gone out on a balcony.
"I cannot imagine why he would go anywhere near a balcony, never mind climb over it," Blanco's mother, Sheila told the U.K.'s Independent on Sunday.
The Blanco family criticized Doherty and others as "sick and inhumane" for supposedly leaving the 30-year-old man bleeding on the ground while they left for another party. They also claimed that Blanco's watch and cufflinks were missing, though another partygoer told the Guardian she had turned them over to police.
The same woman, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Guardian that before Doherty departed the scene on the advice of others, he stood next to Blanco's dying body.
"He came out of the house and was clearly very concerned. He came and stooped down next to me. I was saying to Peter 'it's okay, it's alright,' " the woman said. "Peter went, 'It's not f--king okay; it's not alright' and was clearly very distressed."
Blanco was taken to an area hospital, where he died a day later. On the night of the party, he had reportedly been celebrating winning a role in the play Accidental Death of an Anarchist, in which the title character plunges to his death from a police station.
It's just the latest scandal for Doherty, whose public drug battles have made him a frequent headline fixture.
Last week, he avoided jail on drug charges, instead receiving a fine and losing his driver's license for four months.
