Perry Makes Friends with "Ally"

Ally McBeal has made a new friend: Matthew Perry.

The suddenly much richer Friends funnyman is close to signing up for a guest-starring stint on Fox's dramedy where he'll butt heads with Calista Flockhart's titular attorney, Daily Variety reports.

He's in talks to shoot two episodes, which would run back-to-back as part of a two-hour Ally McBeal special slated to air in April. While the specific plot details remain under wraps, a show rep tells Variety that Perry's character will be a "cocky, successful and opinionated attorney who wreaks havoc on Ally's personal and professional lives."

Perry's stint will also coincide with that of Christina Ricci.

Perry becomes the latest in a Love Boat-like parade of guest stars recruited by Ally producers to plug the hole left by Robert Downey Jr., who was dumped after a drug bust last year. In addition to Ricci, other celebs popping up this season include Jon Bon Jovi, Elton John, Mariah Carey, Dame Edna, Jacqueline Bisset, French Stewart, Jami Gertz and Tom Berenger.

(Meanwhile, E! Online columnist Ted Casablanca reports show staffers are considering bringing Downey back, but nothing's official yet.)

Perry--who with his five Friends cohorts just inked a $1 million-an-episode deal to return to the hit NBC show for one last season next year--hasn't done much television work outside the Friends universe since the show launched in 1994. He appeared as his wise-cracking alter ego Chandler Bing on a crossover episode of NBC's Caroline in the City back in 1995 and lent his voice to The Simpsons' "Tree House of Horror XII" earlier this season.

Perry's other non-Friends credits include the films Swordfish, The Whole Nine Yards, Fools Rush In and the forthcoming Servicing Sara.
