Pennington's Hospital "Makeover"

Home-design guru Ty Pennington underwent an extreme makeover of his own this past weekend.

But not of his own choosing.

The star of ABC's hit home-remodeling series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was taken to an Atlanta hospital Saturday for an emergency appendectomy, the network said Tuesday.

Pennington was in his hometown of Atlanta over the weekend preparing for a future episode of the series when his appendix went on the fritz.

The former Trading Spaces handyman and author of the 2003 New York Times bestseller Ty's Tricks is expected to make a full recovery.

And, he says, his short hospital stay won't keep him from soldiering on with the show from his hospital bed.

"I don't want to let the family down, and all of us with the show want to give them the new house they deserve," Pennington said in a statement. "Thanks to phones and emails, I will be able to maintain my part by giving input to the other designers and discussing our plans for the house. I am just so glad this happened in Atlanta, where I have so much support from my family and friends."

Elements of Pennington's surprise diagnosis and subsequent hospitalization will be incorporated into the episode, which features the home of Lake City, Georgia, residents the Harper family. The Harper abode has some serious plumbing issues, per local reports.

"Instead of disappointing the family and postponing the production, Ty was willing to make his predicament a part of the episode," said Tom Forman, executive producer and creator of the series. "Our show has always been authentic in the way it portrays reality, and this is just another testament to that.?

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ranks among the top 20 most watched shows this season, averaging 15.2 million viewers per episode. The show features a team of designers that rebuilds an entire house at a frenzied pace for a deserving family--who are typically not around to witness the ensuing chaos as their home is wrecked, then remade.
