Peas' Taboo Challenges Pot Rap
Taboo didn't do anything taboo.
That's the word from the Black Eyed Peas performer's attorney, who pleaded not guilty on Taboo's behalf Friday to two misdemeanor marijuana counts resulting from a March DUI bust in a Los Angeles suburb.
The Pea player, whose real name is Jaime Luis Gomez, did not have to appear in person at the West Covina courthouse to enter his plea to the charges.
The hip-hopster was taken into custody Mar. 11 by police in the City of Industry, about 20 miles east of L.A., following a car crash. No one was injured in the accident.
Per the police report, officers determined that Taboo was under the influence and a search of his vehicle turned up less than an ounce of marijuana as well as a medication for which he didn't have a prescription.
He was initially booked for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of a prescribed medication without a prescription and driving under the influence and released on $5,000 bail.
Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney, says prosecutors ultimately opted to charge the 31-year-old rapper with possession of marijuana while driving and possession of 28.5 grams or less of marijuana. The charges were filed May 11.
If convicted, Taboo will likely receive a wrist slap: typical penalties for his offenses include a small fine in the $200 range, possible probation and community service, but no jail time. A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for June 28.
There was no comment Tuesday from Taboo's lawyer or a publicist for the multiplatinum group.
Taboo and his fellow Peas are on a brief hiatus as Stacey Ann "Fergie" Ferguson is on the road in support of her debut solo album, The Dutchess.
The Black Eyed Peas are slated to reconvene onstage July 7 for Al Gore's Live Earth concert. The Grammy-winning group also has pledged to pen a new tune for the occasion.
Following that gig, the Peas reportedly plan to set out on the Black Blue & You World Tour, which will take them to such far-flung locales as Thailand, Australia, Nigeria, Mexico and Venezuela.
