Paul McCartney, Registered Trademark?

Pity all the other McCartneys out there who would like to name a product after themselves. Sir Paul is trying to corner the market.

MPL Communications, the company headed by Paul McCartney, applied Friday to trademark the ex-Beatles' name for use on his lines of vegetarian food and his apparel products, from waistcoats to bathing suits.

The request made on the application would also allow McCartney, a longtime vegetarian, to lend his name to non-veggie items, such as meat, fish and poultry--a move that the rocker's spokesman called "purely defensive."

"It would give him protection against his name being used on products he does not approve of," he told Britain's Guardian newspaper.

The Liverpool native would not, of course, be the first McCartney to see his name in logos. His fashion designer daughter, Stella McCartney, trademarked her eponymous brand name ages ago.

Those who may object to McCartney's latest business venture have three months to file complaints with the Trademarks Registry before a judge decides whether to grant the musician's application, which in addition to listing product categories also singles out items like dressing gowns, bathrobes, sportswear, swimwear, overalls, fancy dress, hosiery and waistcoats.

Linda McCartney was actually the one who launched a line of vegetarian meals in 1991. After her death from breast cancer in 1998, Paul McCartney vowed to keep his first wife's work alive and free of genetically modified ingredients.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer released his fourth classical album, Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart), last month, featuring both English and Latin vocals. Last year's more mainstream offering, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, peaked at number six on the Billboard 200.

McCartney also told the media in September that he's "doing fine" since breaking up with wife number two, Heather Mills, back in May, despite having had to freeze the couple's bank account and accusing her of pilfering cleaning supplies from the home they once shared.

"Life beats you down occasionally," he said. "But I am the eternal optimist. No matter how rough it gets, there's always light somewhere. The rest of the sky may be cloudy, but that little bit of blue draws me on."

Just think, if his petition goes through next year, McCartney may literally be able to offer his own brand of optimism.
