Paris' Mom Not So Hot
All Hiltons are not created equal.
Paris Hilton can draw a crowd sudsing up a car. Kathy Hilton can't even bring down an old House.
I Want to Be a Hilton, the new NBC reality show hosted by the latter, elder Hilton, underwhelmed in its premiere, ranking 29th for the TV week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research.
The opener drew 6.8 million viewers--not good enough to top time-slot rivals Game 6 of the NBA Finals on ABC (third place, 13.5 million), AFI's 100 Years, 100 Movie Quotes special on CBS (11th place, 9 million) or a slightly used House on Fox (15th place, 8.4 million). It wasn't even good enough to secure bragging rights in the House of Hilton.
The Simple Life, starring Kathy Hilton's car-washing daughter Paris, averaged 9.6 million viewers in its latest, if most lackluster, season, for Fox.
I Want to Be a Hilton finds society maven Kathy Hilton schooling 14 ordinary Joes and Janes in the "glamorous lifestyle of high society." (Life Lesson No. 1: If one must writhe atop a soapy car whilst eat a suggestively large hamburger, one must make sure to be paid as much as possible.)
Paris Hilton will lend her considerable celebrity to Mother Hilton's little TV show Tuesday night, putting in a guest appearance along with sister Nicky.
NBC can only hope things get sudsy.
Elsewhere:
Yes, the NBA Finals were the second least watched NBA Finals since 1987, but it's not as if ABC were sacrificing its powerhouse summer schedule to air the San Antonio Spurs-Detroit Pistons series--far from it. Thursday's decisive Game 7 was the most watched prime-time show of the week, sweating it out in front of 19 million viewers. On Dateline NBC, 8.7 million (13th place) watched Katie Couric pin down so-called "Runaway Bride" Jennifer Wilbanks.
What's out for summer? Reruns of ABC's Desperate Housewives (41st place, 5.8 million). What's really out for summer? Reruns of NBC's ER (68th place, 4.5 million). By comparison, reruns of CBS' CSI (fourth place, 12.3 million) can still dominate.
ABC's Dancing with the Stars (second place, 15.5 million) is for real; NBC's Hit Me Baby One More Time (53rd place, 5 million) is a Glass Tiger.
As for ABC's The Scholar (76th place, 3.6 million)? It's just plain flunking out.
Following its big premiere, TNT's The Closer (5.6 million) fell closer to Earth, but remained cable's most watched show.
Overall, CBS won the week among total viewers, averaging 7.5 million; ABC won the 18-49 demo.
Among viewers, ABC was second (7.2 million), followed by NBC (6 million) and Fox (4.9 million). UPN blew past the WB, 2.7 million to 2.2 million.
