Paris Hilton, an heiress to the Hilton hotel empire, was born on Feb. 17, 1981 to Rick and Kathy Hilton. She spent her childhood moving between luxurious homes in Beverly Hills, the Hamptons, and New York City and modeling. As a teenager, she began making her rounds on the party circuit and garnering celebrity status.
In 2003, the socialite landed a reality show on Fox called The Simple Life with best friend Nicole Richie. However, before the show's premiere a sex tape featuring Hilton and then-boyfriend Rick Salomon was leaked to the Internet. One Night in Paris started a media circus, as well as several lawsuits; in the end Paris reportedly got a cut of the profits for the bestseller.
Hilton bounced back quickly. Her television show was an instant success and the premiere attracted 13 million viewers. Fans loved watching the two spoiled, rich girls wreak havoc on an Arkansas farm. Hilton's infamous catchphrase, "That's hot," caught on quickly, and the heiress trademarked it. The popular show, which would later move to E!, ran for four more seasons.
As her fame grew, Hilton began transforming herself into a brand. She released a line of fragrances, jewelry and purses, and her autobiography Confessions of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek behind the Pose made the New York Times bestseller list. Her quote, "Dress cute wherever you go, life is too short to blend in," is even immortalized in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.
Hilton also tried her hand at singing and acting. She appeared in several feature films, including House of Wax, Raising Helen, The Hottie and the Nottie and The Bling Ring. However, her acting abilities were often criticized and several of her movies flopped at the box office. In 2006, she dropped her self-titled album Paris which sold 600,000 copies. Although the album was met with mixed reaction, her single "Stars are Blind" was a massive success worldwide.
In late 2006, she was arrested in Hollywood for driving under the influence, charged with two misdemeanors and sentenced to 36 months on probation. The following year, Hilton was sent to jail for 23 days for violating said probation and driving with a suspended license.
In 2009, Hilton returned to television in another reality series on MTV called Paris Hilton My New BFF which chronicled her search for a best friend. However, Hilton found herself back in hot water several years later when she was arrested in Las Vegas for possession of a controlled substance after police found cocaine in her purse. She pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and avoided jail time by accepting a plea deal.
In 2012, Hilton announced that she was becoming a DJ, and she made her debut at the Pop Music Festival in Brazil. In 2013, she signed with Cash Money Records, began working on a sophomore album and released her single "Good Time" with Lil Wayne in October.
