Paris Free of Charge
Paris Hilton's life just got a little simpler.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday that it would not file charges against the celebutante for allegedly ripping off her own sex tape from a West Hollywood newsstand two months ago.
A spokesperson said the D.A. had rejected the case in the "interest of justice" and due to a "lack of sufficient evidence."
Hilton was reportedly caught on surveillance tape at Swing News in December as she furiously tore up a poster advertising One Night in Paris and swiped the DVD from behind the counter.
Newsstand owner Jason Swing was not amused by Hilton's actions.
"She vandalized the newsstand, she disrespected the newsstand and stole from the newsstand, and that's not cool, and I don't appreciate it," Swing told E! last month.
Upon learning that Hilton would not be charged for the incident, Swing was disheartened.
"I'm disappointed," he told Celebrity Justice. "I'm almost speechless."
Store clerk Jerry Castro, who was working at the time of Hilton's outburst, was outraged by the news that the socialite was getting off scot-free.
"Who does she think she is?" Castro asked, per Celebrity Justice. "What is the D.A. thinking that they're letting her get away with this?"
(On the other hand, seeing as Castro reportedly obtained an agent soon after the Hilton fiasco, perhaps what he's really irate about is those 15 minutes of fame going up in smoke.)
The heiress likely wasn't too focused on the potential charges against her, as she's currently prepping to host Saturday Night Live this Saturday, with musical guest Keane.
It will be Hilton's first appearance as host, though she did drop by the show in 2003 to appear in a "Weekend Update" segment with Jimmy Fallon, shortly after her videotaped mattress romp with ex-boyfriend Rick Salomon went public.
Meanwhile, Simple Life: Interns, the third season of Hilton's reality series with sidekick Nicole Richie, is turning out to be a hit for struggling Fox.
Per Nielsen Media Research, some 13.3 million viewers tuned in last week to watch Hilton and Richie try their hands at being mechanics and office grunts during the show's one-hour premiere, making it the strongest Simple Life start to date.
