Pamela to Derby: Cluck You
From Kentucky Fried Chicken to the Kentucky Derby, the Bluegrass State isn't scoring points with Pamela Anderson.
The former Baywatch babe has announced plans to boycott the annual horse race, claiming it's a form of animal cruelty.
It was a trifecta for the 38-year-old blond bombshell. Last month, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher refused her request to remove a bust of KFC's bow-tied founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, from the state capitol, deeming it a misguided publicity stunt. And aside from what she perceives as equine abuse at the derby, Churchill Downs, the legendary setting for the race, recently signed a sponsorship deal with Yum! Brands Inc., the parent company of KFC.
"I don't want to support cruelty to animals, whether it's forcing horses to race for our amusement or scalding chickens alive for our plate," Anderson said in a statement released through People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Tuesday. "It makes me want to avoid Kentucky altogether, which is sad because there are so many great people there."
The actress has been an active member of PETA for years and has since starred in several anti-fur ad campaigns for the critter-cuddling group. Her efforts have recently gone toward raising awareness of what she calls the abuse of chickens in the processing plants of the Louisville-based fast-food chain.
"I'm not shocked that KFC is sponsoring the Derby," Anderson said. "It's greedy companies using poor animals all the way around...We have to be more evolved than this."
Anderson attended the Kentucky Derby in 2001 and 2003, before, she claims, she was aware of the cruelty involved.
Churchill Downs spokesman Josh Asher said the track is expecting plenty of celebs at this year's festivities, but would gladly welcome her back should she change her stance in the future, saying "fans like to see people like Ms. Anderson at the Derby."
"We would certainly love to welcome her back somewhere down the road," Asher said.
Even though Anderson will be MIA at the run for the roses, her fellow animal lovers will be on hand.
"There will be a PETA presence at the Derby this year," said Dan Matthews, vice president of the organization.
Asher said the track had no indication that the group was planning a protest, but that they try "to plan for any eventuality."
The Kentucky Derby takes place May 6.
