P. Diddy's Latest Court Victory
Once again, it's smooth legal sailing for P. Diddy.
The hip-hop mastermind has skated free of assault charges leveled by a TV talk show host who sued Diddy after allegedly getting roughed up following a 1999 interview gone awry.
Talk show host Roger Mills claimed that Sean "Puffy" Combs' posse gave him a smackdown following an interview in which he asked about the rapper's involvement in the shooting death of Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace.
Mills said that when he asked P. Diddy about his best friend's death, the rapper ended the interview, then his entourage proceeded to break a camera, steal the interview tape and generally beat Mills down.
But a court in Detroit found in favor of Puffy and dismissed all charges Tuesday.
P. Diddy's lawyer seemed thrilled with the verdict.
"We've got a case here where a fruitless lawsuit was brought against Mr. Combs," John Martin Jr. told reporters. "And I think the jury came out loud and clear and said the same thing."
During an interview after he filed the lawsuit, Mills defended his actions saying, "I particularly said, 'There are rumors going out and, we don't believe this, but your fans want to know. Did you have Notorious B.I.G. killed?'"
In his statement, P. Diddy said he didn't even remember the incident occurring and swore he did not order any sort of attack on the intrusive interviewer.
"I knew it was something just about, as far as if I had any role or any feeling about [B.I.G.'s] murder," Combs said in his testimony, adding "I just remember ending the interview."
Mills had been seeking unspecified damages for assault, false imprisonment, destruction of property, intentional infliction of emotional distress and a civil conspiracy.
Mills' attorney could not be reached for comment on the verdict.
