P. Diddy, Marathon Man

P. Diddy's ready to go the distance for charity.

The rap superstar otherwise known as Sean Combs announced Tuesday plans to run in this year's New York Marathon on November 2 in hopes of raising $1 million for health-care and education initiatives benefiting the Big Apple's children.

"Every child needs quality education and health care to train for the marathon of life," Combs, decked out in appropriate running attire, told reporters at a press gathering at a Manhattan Nike Town.

Given that the hip-hopster's only been training for the last three weeks and has a little more than a month to get in shape for the traditionally punishing 26.2 mile trek, the Puffster knows he's got a tough road ahead.

"It's gonna be a rough one. Probably around the 13th mile, I'll really need your support--water, Gatorade, whatever," Combs noted, adding that he'll do whatever it takes to reach the finish line, even if it means getting there on his hands and knees.

The good news is the rap impresario has always been something of a runner.

According to Combs' camp, his training regimen includes a high-protein/low-carb diet, laying off the Cristal and cocktails and running six times a week. He's currently up to 18 miles and is working on increasing his endurance.

The money raised from the run/walk/crawl will benefit three of Puffy's pet causes: New York City public schools, the Children's Hope Foundation, which helps families touched by AIDS, and Combs' own Daddy's House Social Programs. The benjamins will come primarily from a mixture of corporate sponsors like Nike, McDonald's, Footlocker and MTV, as well as donations from individuals. (Info on making donations is online at www.diddyrunsthecity.com or via phone at 877-RUN-DIDDY.)

MTV is planning to air a two-part documentary special chronicling Combs' shakin' his tailfeather around the race course. The first installment will be a one-hour episode following his training and will air on October 30 as a warm-up to the marathon, which is expected to draw more than 31,000 people this year. A half-hour episode charting how he fared in the race is set to air November 8.

When he's not pounding the pavement, the multihyphenate (rapper-producer-actor-fashion entrepreneur-restaurateur) has been busy road-testing another new venture--his own luxury SUV design.

In a partnership with Lincoln, Combs plans to introduce a limited-edition Sean John Navigator, a custom-made vehicle replete with satellite radio, a backup camera, six TV screens and a Sony PlayStation 2, among other amenities. The SUV will retail for $85,000 and only 100 will be available at select Lincoln dealerships starting this month.
