Oscar Invites Ferrell, Foxx

The days of waiting in long lines at the movie theater to see the latest release in the company of weeping children and rude cell phone users may be over for the likes of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx.

The leading men were among the 112 lucky Hollywood types issued invitations to become voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences--a privilege that comes complete with coveted DVDs of Oscar screeners.

For the second year in a row, the Academy publicized its once super-secret list of invitees in an ongoing effort to prove to the public that the approximately 6,000 members who vote on the Oscars aren't just a bunch of doddering old fogies completely out of touch with the film industry.

On the contrary, this year's crop of invitees includes industry players such as Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey, Sony Entertainment chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and Pixar CEO Steve Jobs; quirky Sideways stars Thomas Haden Church and Paul Giamatti; writers Mike White (The School of Rock) and Paul Haggis (Crash); and directors Alejandro Amenabar (The Sea Inside) and Marc Foster (Finding Neverland).

While the Academy adopted a rule last year to accept only 30 new members annually, it was able to issue more than 100 invites due to deaths and members who opted for retired status, meaning they no longer vote.

Currently, there are 5,790 voting members in the Academy, meaning that even if all 112 invitees decide to join Hollywood's top club, the numbers will still be down compared to the 2004 roster, which is consistent with the Academy's decision to slow growth and be more selective.

Candidates for the Academy are usually proposed by members, then considered by representatives from each of the Academy's branches. Oscar nominees are also automatically considered if they aren't already members, but not all receive invites.

This year's invitation list included 33 Oscar nominees in 15 categories, though not necessarily from the most recent 77th Academy Awards.

The actors' branch issued the most invites with 15 recipients, including Ferrell, Foxx, Church, Giamatti, Gael Garcia Bernal, Jennifer Coolidge, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sophie Okonedo, Clive Owen, Charlotte Rampling, Jean Reno, Stellan Skarsgard, Imelda Staunton, Mykelti Williamson and Zhang Ziyi.

Notably absent from the list was Rob Schneider, who was passed over for Academy membership yet again and was subsequently spotted in a darkened movie theater, weeping softly into his popcorn. (Okay, we made that part up, but we're expecting him to draft an angry letter sometime in the near future.)

Those who accept the Academy's invitation will be inducted Sept. 21 at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills.
