Oprah's on Jury Duty
Daytime's reigning talk queen has proven she's just one of the people: Oprah Winfrey has been tapped for jury duty at Cook County Criminal Court in Chicago.
Officials had said Winfrey wouldn't receive special treatment at the courthouse--except to be snuck into the building through an alternate entrance to avoid the crowds--but who knew they really meant it?
The gabber had even told reporters she didn't expect to be picked because she's too opinionated, besides being one busy woman. "I'm just hoping it doesn't take longer than a week because I've got shows to do," she said.
The "I've got a billion-dollar brand to attend to" excuse didn't seem to fly, though.
Winfrey was among 300 prospective jurors scheduled to be interviewed today for an upcoming murder trial. When asked how the final selection was made, Judge James B. Linn said, "This was a straight-up jury selection."
Once she makes it through jury duty, the Emmy-winning yakker will continue to keep busy through 2011, having recently inked an extension on her contract to carry The Oprah Winfrey Show through its 25th year in syndication.
Under her new deal, Winfrey will host 140 episodes per year through 2010. In 2010-11, Winfrey will cut back to 130 episodes, leaving her more time to fulfill her civic duties and count the millions she invariably earned off the TV pact.
