Oprah Pays Out
Everybody gets a check! Everybody gets a check!
Everybody who turns in a sex offender, that is.
Oprah Winfrey handed out a pair of $50,000 checks on her talk show Tuesday to two women responsible for turning in a fugitive sex offender just 48 hours after he was featured on Winfrey's show.
Karie Miller, of Fargo, North Dakota, and Jean Rosenthal, of Moorhead, Minnesota, collected for their part in capturing Indiana fugitive William C. Davis.
On Oct. 4, Winfrey devoted a show to raising awareness of child predators and announcing "Oprah's Child Predator Watch List," featuring a round up of the FBI's most wanted offenders. The do-good host vowed to hand over $100,000 of her own money to any viewer whose tip led to the capture and arrest of one of the men.
"With every breath in my body, whatever it takes and, most importantly, with you by my side, we are going to move heaven and earth to stop an evil that's been going on for far too long," Winfrey said on her show last week.
Rosenthal recognized Davis' photo from the program as her pal Miller's neighbor. Rosenthal alerted her friend, who in turn checked the sex offenders' profiles on Oprah.com. Miller then phoned FBI agents in Minneapolis to turn in the man, who shared a duplex with her and her children.
At the time, Davis was going by his brother's name, Mark Allen.
"This is why I say you were so courageous, because you know what courage is," Winfrey told the women, who received a standing ovation from the studio audience. "It's being scared but doing it anyway."
Authorities wanted Davis on 10 felony charges stemming from the molestation of three Indiana boys and failing to register as a sex offender. He was previously convicted in 1992.
Davis is being held in a Fargo prison awaiting extradition to Indiana.
A second fugitive was also captured thanks to viewers of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Accused sex offender Niles Scott, 50, was arrested in Belize City, Belize, after a local woman recognized him from the show and contacted local authorities.
"We considered Mr. Scott a dangerous fugitive," FBI special agent Scott Wilson told Winfrey. "He was wanted for rape and kidnapping and for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution."
Scott was flown back to Cleveland, where he is awaiting trial.
Belize officials are working to determine which local tipsters are eligible to receive the $100,000 reward, with the money most likely being split between several parties.
Regardless of who receives the check, said Winfrey, "This is the best money I've ever spent."
