O.J. Back Under Microscope
Orenthal James Simpson is the newest rat cooked up in the reality-television lab. The Heisman Trophy winner, who was acquitted of killing ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1995, is about to find himself the subject of an unscripted series, cobbled together from footage shot in Miami in 2001-02.
Texas-based Urban American Television Network has inked a deal with a Florida concert promoter to distribute 13 weekly episodes featuring Simpson to its 75 station affiliates (all indies) this June.
But there's one big catch. Unlike, say, Anna Nicole Smith or the Osbournes, Simpson did not sign off on the series, his lawyer tells E! News Live.
The show will be edited from 60 hours of candid O.J. footage captured onstage and behind the scenes at several rap concerts during the former football great's stints as a concert emcee in 2001-02, Norman Pardo, founder of Spiderboy International Inc., which created the show, tells the New York Post. "We have a lot of film of O.J. in various locations," said Pardo.
Simpson's legal eagle, however, contends the footage wasn't sanctioned by the former footballer. "There is no reality show," Yale Galanter tells E!. While the Simpson camp is decidedly unhappy about the show, Galanter did not say whether any legal action would be forthcoming.
Attempts to reach Spiderboy were unsuccessful, while calls to Urban America Television Network were not immediately returned.
Among the concerts Simpson attended was an August 2001 Florida gig featuring such artists as Wyclef Jean, Lil' Mo, Noreaga and Foxy Brown, where he signed autographs and spoke to a largely receptive crowd. Simpson didn't fare as well at a Connecticut hip-hop concert that December, when less than 100 people showed up to gawk at the embattled athlete-actor and the evening's act, R&B group Allure. The concert was canceled due to the poor turnout.
Simpson was acquitted of the grisly 1994 murders of his ex-wife and her friend. He moved to Florida from California after a civil court ordered him to pay $33.5 million to the victims' families in a wrongful-death lawsuit.
Since then, the Juice has drawn negative attention like Botox attracts aging actresses. First came the December 2000 road-rage charges, accusing Simpson of going ballistic on a horn-heavy motorist. He was acquitted. Then FBI and DEA agents searched Simpson's Miami home in connection with a federal drug probe. He wasn't charged with any crime.
More recently, Simpson was slapped with a speeding ticket for racing a powerboat through Biscayne Bay and harassing the endangered manatees who live there. A warrant was issued for Simpson's arrest when he missed a court date stemming from the incident. The matter was later resolved without Simpson spending time behind bars.
Finally, in January, cops were called to the Simpson home after his 17-year-old daughter Sydney placed a distraught 911 call following an alleged shouting match between her and her father. The police chalked the incident up to a family argument, and no charges were filed.
