Noth Lands New "L&O" Slot

Chris Noth is back on the Law & Order beat.

Noth, who left the flagship series in NBC's long-running crime franchise 10 years ago, is reprising his role as Detective Mike Logan. But this time, he shares case-solving duties with Vincent D'Onofrio's Detective Robert Goren on the spinoff Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

NBC and Dick Wolf, producer of all four L&O series, announced late Tuesday that the two men would get equal billing during their split-shift assignments--11 episodes each next season--and ends the rumor that Noth would be taking over entirely from D'Onofrio, who collapsed in November--under the strain of headlining the hour drama as the ultraquirky, intense mastermind Goren--and was briefly hospitalized for exhaustion.

"The hardest job in show business is being a single lead on an hour drama series," creator and executive producer Dick Wolf said in a statement. "Vincent has done an unbelievable job for the last four seasons, but after three and half years, the grueling pace finally took its toll. This is an ideal solution, so that Vincent can continue to do the incredible work that has become the hallmark of the role. I've worked with Chris over the past 17 years, and bringing him on to reprise one of the most popular characters in the history of the brand is a win-win situation."

Noth played the maverick Logan on Law & Order from the ripped-from-the-headlines crime show's inception in 1990 until 1995 alongside a changing cast of partners--Max Greevey (George Dzundza), Phil Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) and Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach). After season five Noth left the show, seemingly just another victim of its revolving-door casting policy.

But in 1998, he reprised the Logan character in an NBC movie, executive produced by Wolf, Exiled: A Law & Order Movie, which caught up with the sometimes testy cop on Long Island, where he'd been shunted after punching a NYC councilman. Wolf and NUTS (the acronym for NBC Universal Television Studios) also have other Logan properties in development.

Most recently Noth has, of course, been best know as Carrie's seductive Mr. Big in HBO's hit series Sex and the City.

Next season, Law & Order: CI's fifth, he is set to be paired with an as-yet unnamed partner on the Major Case Squad in pursuit of "the worst criminal offenders." But first, he will turn up in this Sunday's episode, "Stress Position," dropping by to "warily" aid Goren and Detective Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe) because he's dating a prison nurse who has information that could help them crack a case involving prisoner abuse and political corruption.

Noth gushed about how "great" it was to back working with the producers and the Law & Order family. "I felt very much at home when I did the guest shot and realized how terrific the cast and crew are, it was an offer that I couldn't refuse," he said in an NBC press release.

Meantime, in the same statement, D'Onofrio affirmed his intention to stay put: "I love this show, and I hope to stay with it as long as it is on the air. After recently working with Chris on an episode, I am excited about what he will bring to the show creatively, and my reduced workload will be very welcome."
