Notes from the Indie-Ground: Adam Carolla's Fists in The Hammer

The Hammer: Adam Corolla Bentley Filmgroup
Heather Juergensen is forever cool because she cowrote and starred in Kissing Jessica Stein, a movie that kicks the butt of most studio-produced modern romantic comedies. (Hi, Kate Hudson.) Next up, Heather boxes and flirts with Adam Carolla in The Hammer, a heartfelt indie comedy about a construction worker who jabs his way onto the U.S. Olympic boxing team. TriBeCa Film Festival-goers can check out The Hammer Apr. 26. The rest of us can whet our appetites for fist-on-face destruction with a peek behind the scenes, courtesy of Heather.

Rocky, Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby, Cinderella Man (okay, scratch that last one). Tell me what appeals to you about the boxing world.
The honest truth is I don't like boxing. It has something to do with getting squeamish while watching grown men bash each other's brains in.

That said, one thing I did learn in the course of shooting is how incredibly specific it is. I now understand why they call it "the sweet science." But I still don't like watching brains get bashed in.

Scary, agreed. How did Adam do this movie, what with his daily radio show?
Good question! Poor Adam, for the second half of the four-week shoot ,he had to get up at 4:30 a.m., perform for four hours on the radio, then drive to set and give us eight hours. The worst part was that we shot some of his most grueling boxing scenes—like the big climactic fight—during this period. But Adam never complained. I think that when you've worked construction and crap jobs like he has, you understand how lucky you are to be working a 12-hour day shooting a movie.

Amen. So, your husband, sportswriter Kevin Hench, wrote the Hammer script. How did that happen?
Kevin was a writer on The Man Show. Adam came to Kevin with the idea for The Hammer and asked if Kevin wanted to write it. Kevin jumped at the chance. He actually finished the first draft of the screenplay the day before we got married, and we literally handed the script to our producer from a moving taxicab as we were leaving for our honeymoon!

That's so romantic! Okay, so what was the most stressful aspect of shooting?
A restaurant in Silverlake kicked us out in the middle of shooting, and we had to scramble that day to find a new place. That was stressful. We ended up commandeering a Mexican lady with a taco truck and shooting the scene outside. Also, when we were shooting in Burbank, the cops were really breathing down our necks. Take a chill pill, Burbank PD. It's only a movie.

Naturally, now I have to ask, Who got the most wasted at the wrap party?
I think it was a tie between Ozzie, the real-life Nicaraguan construction worker who plays Adam's sidekick, and me. However, as I didn't wind up on a table doing a striptease, I'd say the prize has to go to Ozzie.

Congrats, Ozzie!
