No Comeback for Siegfried & Roy?

Siegfried & Roy's Las Vegas show will not be magically appearing anytime soon.

A spokeswoman for the famed Vegas tiger tamers Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn told the German weekly Neue Post (think a Deutschland Star magazine) that the duo will never return to the stage.

Although the pair's kitschy yet profitable show at the MGM Mirage casino has long been considered kaput(the 267 members of the production crew who worked on the show were laid off just days after Horn's attack), many fans--and Fishbacher himself--were hoping for a comeback.

It's no secret that Horn's condition remains serious, despite the best medical care doctors in Las Vegas and Los Angeles could muster after Horn's mauling last fall by his beloved white tiger Montecore. Several U.S. tabloids recently ran pictures of Horn still in his wheelchair with scars plainly visible. Horn's spokeswoman says the performer has "good days and bad days," and that his condition is not likely to bring Horn back to 100 percent anytime soon.

The one thing the spokeswoman was adamant about, however, was that the pair would not be performing again.

While Horn's survival and subsequent convalescence was deemed "miraculous" by one of the neurosurgeons who operated on him, a complete recovery that would allow him to once again reign supreme onstage seems more unlikely with each passing month.

Siegfried & Roy's Las Vegas show minted money for the Mirage. In 2003, the duo pulled in an estimated $43.8 million for the casino in ticket sales alone, according to Lasvegasadvisor.com. Merchandising revenue from the show, including video and DVD sales, also generated huge sums.

But, as they are prone to say in Vegas, the show must go on. The Mirage has had some success lately with headlining comedy sets by Ray Romano, and the casino recently made headlines with its proposed merger with the Mandalay Resort Group.

Although Siegfreid & Roy have ruled out a return to the stage, their likenesses will grace one of NBC's most hyped new series, the animated Father of the Pride from DreamWorks.

The big-budgeted series, set backstage at Siegfried & Roy's Vegas showcase and featuring John Goodman and Cheryl Hines doing voices for animated lions, is set to debut Aug. 31 in its regular Tuesday-at-9 p.m. slot

While the illusionists themselves aren't directly involved in the series (voiceover actors play the 'toon versions of Siegfried & Roy), NBC made the ill-advised decision of having Horn promote the show via satellite during the network's upfront presentation to advertisers.

But the move backfired. With Horn obviously still suffering from the mauling, the idea of him hyping a series featuring harmless critters seemed incongrous and unnerved many attendees. The buzz has grown so bad that many critics are predicting an early exit for the series.
