Nitpickture (Oscar Edition): Little Miss Sunshine
20th Century Fox
Bear with me. A recent story in Today's Local News confirmed that eight year-old Sunshine "pageant contestant" Maliah Hudson, who is emboldened by her appearance in Sunshine and a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, has retired from the pageant path. Fear not, she is pursuing an acting career, so we haven't heard the last of her.
Oh, and check out this bizarre non sequitur in the story:
"The years participating in pageants have given Maliah an unwavering self-confidence she will carry with her for life. 'I think she's a little scared, after what's been going on with JonBenet Ramsey,' Grandpa Dave said, in reference to the murdered Colorado beauty queen."
Wow.
Anyway. If the retirement of a genetically superior child beauty queen seems like a reach for a nitpick, that's because it is. What can I say? There's nothing else wrong with this movie. I heart Sunshine big time.
I forgive the Most Convenient Convenience Store in the history of American cinema. I try to forget about the long-term psychological implications that may or may not stem from Abigail Breslin's stint in a fat suit. My time, after all, is better spent praying that Alan Arkin gets to win.
