Nitpickture (Oscar Edition): Babel
Paramount Vantage
It's time. Oh, it is. I swear I can hear the publicists hissing with pleasure as they gear up to sing the praises of special-edition clutch bags. I can also hear the sound of colonic machines humming and readying for action all across Beverly Hills. Yes, the Oscars...are coming!
And to celebrate, let's cast away our colons and clutches and focus instead on the films. The Best Picture nominees—all of which, let's say, could use a little work this year. I only tease those I love, and I do love all the nominated films (except for one, gulp!).
First up, Babel. I would love to root for this movie. And I am certainly rooting for Adriana Barraza to take Best Supporting Actress.
If you don't feel anything when she is wandering through the desert in that tattered crimson party dress, you need help. Plus, whenever I see Ms. Barraza at events around town, she looks so damn happy, giddily telling those who compliment her that she gained weight for the movie. And she doesn't speak about the poundage in that annoying holier-than-thou way either. Woman just seems on top of the world.

And hats off to gentlemanly Brad Pitt for praising Cate Blanchett and showing us his gray hair and saggy eyelids.
The question is, why can't some of that happy-happy-joy-joy spill over to Babel's parents, director Alejandro González Iñárritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga? As you've probably heard, they're going through a creative divorce that makes Brad and Jennifer Aniston's breakup look like a walk in a Malibu beach parking lot.
Here's what the Chyron might read if these two decided to duke it out on Jerry Springer:
Arriaga = Sloppy Seconds? Well, according to Iñárritu, hell yes. He tells some reporters he settled on Arriaga after meeting with other writers. As if that's not bad enough, he has hinted that the script was overhauled. Snap!
Iñárritu = Big Fat Liar? Arriaga, who has been much more outspoken about the split, has countered that all three pictures in their trilogy—Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel—stem from ideas he had "a long time" before the two even met. Meow.
My, isn't it fun when boys catfight?
