Nicole Richie's Sitcom Life

The Simple Life isn't enough for Nicole Richie--she wants her shot at the sitcom life.

Paris Hilton's ex-BFF has signed a talent deal with 20th Century Fox Television that will give her a chance to move out of her former sidekick's shadow and into the small-screen spotlight.

Under the deal, Fox will either develop a new show around Richie or cast her in an existing project.

Though the petite celebutante has never held down a television role outside of The Simple Life, the powers that be at 20th Century Fox are convinced she has the comedic chops to pull it off.

"Look at episodes of The Simple Life, where the humor is completely derived by Paris' and Nicole's reaction to situations," 20th Century Fox TV President Dana Walden told Daily Variety. "Consistently Nicole is able to mine comedy in the various episodes."

Richie is already meeting with writers and has indicated that she is interested in playing a character loosely based on herself.

"Things are funnier when you base them on your real life, when you make fun of yourself," Richie told Variety. "But it's definitely a sitcom [as opposed to reality]."

Richie made her film debut earlier this year in the comedy Kids in America and will return with Hilton for a fourth season of The Simple Life, which is set to air on E! Entertainment Television beginning in spring 2006. (E! Entertainment Television and E! Online are divisions of E! Networks.)

She is currently touring the country, promoting her book The Truth About Diamonds.

In addition to the numerous projects the budding actress-author-socialite has in the works, Richie, 24, also has a wedding to plan.

Lionel Richie's little girl accepted a proposal from boyfriend DJ AM back in February. She did not, however, accept a proposal from Fox to turn her nuptials into a reality skein.

"I would never put my own personal marriage on television," Richie said in August.

It may not be reality fodder, but Richie hasn't shied away from providing a few details about her upcoming wedding.

"I want our wedding to be huge. And I want everyone to come, and I want it to be the happiest day of my life," she told Jane magazine.

One person probably not on the guest list is, of course, Hilton, who recently ended her own engagement to ex-boyfriend Paris Latsis.

Since returning to the single life, Hilton has once again become a fixture on the party circuit (as if she ever really left).

In her latest business venture, the everywhere heiress launched her own line of limited edition watches, priced at an affordable (for a Hilton) $100,000 apiece. The timepieces contain approximately $1,000 in diamonds and show the time in all five time zones--an essential feature to any jet setter on the go.

"I worked with the watchmakers and designed the entire watch and the box it came in," Hilton told reporters. "It has two of my favorite things: diamonds and travel."

Hilton said she was putting the final touches on her upcoming album, which is due out in April.

"I love music, it was so fun to work on," she told E! News.

She also revealed her new catch phrase for 2006.

"It's not, 'That's hot,' anymore...the new phrase is, 'That's sexy!'" Hilton said.

Look for the trademark application any day now.
