Nicole Doubles Up on Honors

Nicole Kidman played a United Nations employee in The Interpreter. Now the actress has been tapped for a real-life role with the global association.

On Thursday, the U.N. named the Oscar-winning actress a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), where she will work on "critical gender concerns such as ending violence against women," according to a U.N. statement.

"Nicole joins UNIFEM as we are celebrating our 30th anniversary to help raise awareness on issues of pressing concern to women around the world," UNIFEM's Executive Director Noeleen Heyzer said Thursday.

Kidman will team with fellow UNIFEM ambassadors Princess Basma of Jordan, who focuses her attention on the Middle East, and Phoebe Asiyo, a member of the Kenyan Parliament.

The actress' goodwill post was previously held by Julie Andrews in the 1990s.

"I am honored that UNIFEM has asked me to serve as goodwill ambassador and I look forward to a close, long-term relationship," Kidman said at a news conference at the U.N.

Kidman comes to the job with previous U.N. experience, as she has worked with the United Nations Children's Fund since 1994.

It was an ego-boosting day for the Bewitched star, who was also awarded her adopted country's highest civilian honor Thursday, when she was named Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

The actress received the title in recognition of her charity work, including advocacy for cancer research and improved health care for women and children, as well as for her acting prowess and contributions to the performing arts.

She was one of 600 hundred Australians recognized during Australia Day festivities in Sydney, but one of only eight to receive the top honor. The award means that she can take the letters "AC" after her name, if she chooses.

Though she could not attend the ceremony in person, Kidman issued a statement conveying her gratitude for the recognition.

"I am deeply moved that I have been chosen to receive this prestigious award. It is an honor beyond any of my expectations," Kidman said.

"I am grateful for the opportunities that Australia has given me and it has always been a privilege to represent my country wherever and whenever I can."
