Nicolas Cage Takes Home United Nations Honors

Nicolas Cage AP Photo

Finally, some good news for Nicolas Cage.

In the midst of his recent financial woes, the Oscar-winning thesp was honored by the United Nations for his philanthropic spirit Friday night, taking home the Global Citizen of the Year award for his humanitarian endeavors.

The U.N. also named Cage as its Goodwill Ambassador for Global Justice for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, after his demonstrated devotion to the cause in recent years.

Turns out, this Bad Leiutenant is nothing more than a big ol' softie.

"My real-life role as UNODC Goodwill Ambassador will certainly be even more challenging and meaningful than those I have portrayed onscreen," Cage said in response to the U.N. honor. "I intend to shine the spotlight on the need for global justice, publicize all the good work that UNODC is doing and highlight how we can all make a difference."

As an Amnesty International advocate, the 45-year-old Lord of War star has donated $2 million to establish a fund that helps former child soldiers, and also led a campaign to raise awareness of international arms control.
