New Star Trek Villain Revealed: Get a First Look!

Star Trek, Cast Industrial Light and Magic / Paramount Pictures

Star Trek 2 might not have an official title just yet, but it appears we have ourselves a villain.

Before the highly anticipated Star Trek sequel hits theaters next year, we snagged a pic that will surely pique the interest of Trekkies.

A newcomer was spotted battling the likes of Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Zoe Saldana (Lt. Uhura) on the set of the sci-fi flick…and it looked like things were getting pretty intense.

So, who's the villain at hand?

It's BBC Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, who has also appeared in films like War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Atonement, among others.

Cumberbatch was snapped twisting Spock's arm, and then falling under the intensity of Spock's Vulcan death grip as the duo fought it out.

But that wasn't all.

The Star Trek newbie also goes head to head with Uhura, who walks towards the unnamed bad guy with a phaser (and a look that means business).

While we're not sure of Cumberbatch's exact role just yet (details of the sci-fi fantasy flick are still being kept under wraps), he can be seen wearing a black version of the Star Fleet uniform under his overcoat in one shot, which makes this particular role even more peculiar.

Cumberbatch confirmed news of his casting back in January, and although he said he was "hugely excited" about snagging the role, he kept mum on any details of exactly what role he would be playing.

For now, it looks like that unanswered question will have to wait until Star Trek 2 hits theaters May 2013.
