A New "Desperate" Dame
The Desperate Housewives denizens have been accused of some diva-like behavior in the past, but now a real mother is coming to the set.
And we mean that in the nicest possible way.
Veteran actress Maria Conchita Alonso has signed on to star as the maternal unit of Eva Longoria's character, Gabrielle, in the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning sudser.
Alonso, 48, is tentatively scheduled to appear in the Feb. 19 episode as the much talked about, but hitherto never seen Lucia, who unexpectedly drops in on her daughter after splitting from the latest in a long line of husbands.
"She's extremely ecstatic and she loves the role," Rona Menashe, Alonso's publicist said Thursday. "She watches the show and loves it."
Lucia has been referred to several times by Gaby, though never in a particularly loving way.
Alonso is filming her episode this week.
The Cuban-born actress made her U.S. debut in the 1984 comedy Moscow on the Hudson alongside Robin Williams. A former Miss Teenager of the World, Alonso went on to star in high-profile shoot 'em ups The Running Man, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Predator 2.
More recently, Alonso starred in the big screen comedy Chasing Papi and the TV miniseries Kingpin. She is also a Grammy-nominated singer.
In addition to her Housewives chores, Alonso is keeping plenty busy this year. She has five films in production, per IMDb.com, all due out this year. Those projects include the just wrapped Material Girls, starring Hilary and Haylie Duff as spoiled heiress sisters, The Last Guy on Earth, starring Rob Schneider, and Richard III, in which she plays Queen Elizabeth.
