Some of us look at Neil Patrick Harris and can still remember him as Doogie Howser M.D.
But he's done a lot since then. Since his breakout role in the early '90s TV series, Harris has gone on to star in Broadway productions, the Harold and Kumar films and the popular TV series How I Met Your Mother, the latter earning Harris an Emmy nomination. As well, he performed in Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, done voiceover work for cartoons and become one of the go-to hosts for award shows.
These days, Harris is proudly out as an openly gay man. But rumors of Harris' sexuality started in 2005 when he began starring as the womanizing cad, Barry Stinson, on How I Met Your Mother. After speculation filled tabloids, the actor confirmed the rumors in 2006 when he came out in an interview with People magazine. Harris simply said, "I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love." His announcement made New York Magazine proclaim Neil as "Hollywood's first (openly) gay breakthrough star."
The stellar entertainer is engaged to fellow actor David Burtka. The two revealed their engagement on Twitter when New York's Marriage Equality Act passed in 2011. The lovely couple became parents via a surrogate mother in October 2010. They are the proud parents of twins, son Gideon Scott and daughter Harper Grace and have shared some adorable family moments on Instagram and other social media.
In 2010, Harris was voted one of TIME magazine's "Most Influential People," TIME's Joss Whedon writing, "He made the issue of his sexuality disappear without desexualizing himself. He can get the girl and sing about the boys, and it all works. The public's perception of gay men is shifting because of this guy, and they'll be too entertained to notice. That's more than a good trick. That's magic."
Speaking of magic, the actor is a magic aficionado and president of the Board of Directors for the iconic Magic Castle in Hollywood. And he continues to be a hot commodity. In addition to his role on How I Met Your Mother, the CBS star has also hosted the Emmy and Tony Awards where he received rave reviews for his abilities. One critic saying, "He's funny, charming, talented and cool under pressure," adding "Harris made the show worth watching all by himself."
But wait, there's more! The trailblazing actor recently took home two awards himself at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his hosting duties at the Tony Awards and his guest-starring role on Glee.
