NBC Uncrosses Madonna

Madonna's latest interpretation of "Live to Tell" won't live to see a national telecast after all.

In the upcoming concert special Madonna: The Confessions Tour, NBC has decided to edit out scenes of the Material Girl's controversial mock crucifixion, in which she wears a crown of thorns and is suspended from a 20-foot mirrored cross during her performance of the aforementioned ballad.

Sources close to the decision confirmed to reporters Thursday that producers will instead cut to other areas of the venue while Madonna is hangin' around and then refocus on the pop icon once she disengages to finish the song.

The two-hour concert, set to air Nov. 22 on NBC, was filmed at London's Wembley Stadium. Madonna's Confessions tour ended up doing record business for a female artist, despite the large number of peeved ecclesiastical types left in its wake.

Religious groups from the U.S. to Rome to Russia voiced their objections to the crucifixion sequence, calling it blasphemous, sacrilegious and downright anti-Christian.

Madonna later tried to clarify her creative process, calling the gesture "a plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole."

Also during "Live to Tell," pictures of impoverished Third World citizens flash on a screen, while a ticker counts up to 12 million, representing the number of children left orphaned by the AIDS crisis in Africa.

Few were appeased, however, with people still threatening to boycott the concert's commercial sponsors if NBC didn't, how should we say it, censor the broadcast.

Not being one to shy away from subjects that might make the average Joe uncomfortable, Madonna originally insisted that the crucifixion be included, and network president Kevin Reilly told TVGuide.com last month that the scene would probably make the cut.

But a network spokesperson told People Thursday that the Kabbalah devotee, who's also listed as one of the special's executive producers, was in on the final decision.
